Volatile Organic Compound Concentration Limits Regulations
The Government of Canada have taken action to protect the environment and health of Canadians from the effects of air pollution. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted as gases from different forms of solids or liquids, which contains chemicals that can have serious health effects to consumers. VOCs are caused through the use of solvent-based products releasing chemicals to the atmosphere through evaporation that contributes to the formation of ground-level ozone and particulate matter forming smog. VOCs are emitted by a variety of products, which includes cleaning supplies, pesticides, office equipment, building materials and furnishing, etc. Due to the high level of VOCs from consumer and commercial-based products, the Government of Canada wants to reformulate products to contain lower level of VOCs. The regulation set mandatory VOC concentration limits on 53 categories of Architectural paints and coatings. Therefore Products that exceed VOC limit of their category are banned from being manufactured or imported in Canada as of September 2010 and products that exceed their VOC category limits can be sold up to September of 2012. After the date, it will be illegal for distributors and retailers to supply non-compliant coatings for architectural applications.
